The Tommy Dorsey Band was together with Artie Shaw the most interesting of the white big bands – it had far more variety and is now more listenable than Benny Goodman's for instance. It was not of course a pure jazz orchestra. The primary function was as a dance band but it had high performance standards and Dorsey's trombone in the melody statements gave it an instantly recognizable identity. Recommended to anyone who is not familiar with the music.
