If you want to hear some of the hottest titles recorded by British dance bands between 1925 and 1937 then this is the disc for you. It kicks off with the Kit Cat Band's version of Riverboat Shuffle, in which trumpeter Tom Smith bows in the direction of Bix's solo on the Wolverines' recording. Bert Firman's Devonshire Restaurant Dance Band follow with Sugar Foot Stomp, in which the American trumpeter Frank Guarante echoes the King Oliver solo, not surprisingly since the two had compared notes. Fred Elizalde's Cambridge Undergraduates band predate his stint at the Savoy Hotel, but give a very good account of themselves. And so it goes on, but the standout track has to be the Rhythm Maniacs recording of That's a Plenty, with Sylvester Ahola's brilliant lead. Just one thing to look out for, which is that tracks 14 and 15 have been transposed on the disc.
